Designing a Brighter Workday: Why We Refreshed Our Brand
When you live and breathe a brand for years, you develop a sixth sense for when it’s time to evolve.
As a creative leadership team, the spark wasn’t a single meeting or presentation. It was a growing realization. The way Workday was showing up in the world visually didn’t fully match the energy, warmth, and momentum we were experiencing internally. It wasn’t broken, but it wasn’t telling the full story either.
Workday had grown. Our community had expanded. And our brand needed to reflect that evolution. We were at an inflection point. This refresh wasn’t about reinvention. It was about realignment, connecting how we look and sound with who we’ve become, stepping confidently into the future. We sharpened what we stand for, what we care about, and how that ultimately informs how we show up as a brand both visually and verbally.
So, what message is the new identity trying to send?
We wanted people to feel something when they interacted with our brand, whether they’re a customer, a candidate, a partner, or a Workmate. That meant making it feel more vibrant, more human, and more distinctly Workday.
It was time to turn up the volume on our optimism. To show confidence without losing approachability and much-needed humanity. And to embrace a modern system that could flex across every part of the business, from .com, to product, to employee storytelling, we landed on what sets us apart across some key components.
We put people first.
We’re always evolving.
We take big swings.
We’ve earned trust.
We make an impact.
Our brand identity embodies the start of a bright new day, sun-drenched with possibility and boundless opportunity. Optimistic at its core, Workday will shine a light on what makes work, work better-providing the clarity needed to make big business decisions that propel companies forever forward.
A Look at the Refreshed Brand
Let me walk you through some of the creative decisions that brought the refresh to life. These were key for me as a brand leader, and for our amazing team who brought it all together with heart and craft.
- Logo and Symbolism: We kept the iconic horizon in our logo, because it’s always been about optimism and new beginnings. But we gave it more room to breathe, simplifying the curves and letterforms to make it feel more modern and intentional. It still smiles, but now with a bit more clarity and maturity.
- Typography: We created a custom wordmark and typeface, Workday Sans, built to be highly legible, versatile, and uniquely ours. It gives the brand a voice that’s clear and confident, without ever feeling corporate or cold.
- Color Palette: The colors were inspired by the natural rhythms of the day. We use warm yellows to signal energy, soft blues to represent focus, and bold gradients to create a sense of movement and light. It’s a palette that reflects the balance of a real work day: dynamic, calm, bright, and focused.
- Photography: We moved away from staged B2B imagery in favor of real people, real light, and real work moments. You’ll see more natural expressions, diverse settings, and honest storytelling. It feels less like stock and more like us.
Overall Concept
At the heart of the rebrand remains the representation of our mission to inspire “A Brighter Workday for All.” It’s been, and will continue to be, our creative north star. It’s what drives us when we come to work. It reminds us that design is a way to inspire, elevate, and connect with the people we serve. Making better work and work better, is a core driver for Workday. We are reimagining how businesses manage what’s most important to them — their people and their money. Inspiring a brighter work day for all means always looking forward, and doing so with optimism, integrity, and ambition. It’s the endless pursuit of crafting a better tomorrow, whether that be creating a platform that influences bigger, bolder, more impactful ideas, or removing the obstacles that stand in the way of them.
So Why Now?
This was a conscious decision to align our brand with our vision. The brand refresh came at an inflection point for the entire company.
A growing global presence joining the Fortune 500 reflecting our leadership status. Evolving tech (Al), post-pandemic work, reflecting our focus on innovation. An anticipatory excitement for what’s to come, we’ve set our sights on moving the needle with class, and building a brand with equity.
We’ve always believed in delivering a better way to work. But to tell that story effectively, we needed a system that reflected our culture, one built on integrity, fun, and innovation, and gave us space to grow.
As Workday becomes more global-first, more product-diverse, and more people-focused, the brand needed to scale with us. The refresh lets us do just that while staying rooted in the values that have defined us from day one.
What Did This Mean to Me, Personally?
As a creative leader, this project was incredibly meaningful. Not just because of the scope or scale, but because of the people.
We partnered with Koto Studio, who brought deep creative insight and rigor, and collaborated across internal teams in brand, marketing, and product design, you name it. It was a true team effort. And that spirit of collaboration made the outcome even more special.
What I loved most was seeing how the refreshed identity gave our Workmates a renewed sense of pride. It felt like, “Yes, this is us.”
For Creatives Considering Workday…
If you’re a designer, writer, strategist, or storyteller looking for your next chapter, here’s what I’ll say:
At Workday, creative isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of how we grow, connect, and lead. You’ll find a culture that values clarity and heart, where big ideas are welcomed and collaboration is real. We work hard, move fast, and have fun doing it.
Final Thought: “Workday’s rebrand isn’t just a new look, it’s a realignment of who we are with how we show up.”
