Hi there — and thank you for your interest in joining Workday! I’m excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what happens after you submit your application, what we look for in candidates, and how you can prepare for the interview process. Let’s dive in!

What Happens After You Apply

1. Application Review
A TA Partner will go through the applications received for an open role. Please allow 5–10 business days for us to review your application.

2. If Your Skills Are a Match
One of my colleagues from the Talent Acquisition team will reach out to schedule a recruiter phone screen. We use an automated scheduling tool, so keep an eye on your inbox for an email or calendar invitation.

A Skills-First Approach to Hiring

At Workday, we’re on an exciting journey toward a skills-based, AI-powered future. This means we focus on identifying and understanding the skills that matter most for each role.

During the interview process, you’ll be evaluated on two areas:

  • Job-Critical Skills: These are the technical, functional, and soft skills essential for success in the job you’ve applied for.
  • Workday Core Skills: These are enduring behaviors that reflect Workday’s values and help all Workmates perform at their best.

Your Talent Acquisition Partner will guide you through the specific skills we’re looking for in the role you’ve applied for.

In my own words, we’re seeking individuals who are passionate about working with people and technology, who welcome challenges and learning opportunities with enthusiasm, thrive in an ever-changing environment, and know how to enjoy the journey.

What We Look For: Understanding Our Skills-Based Interview Process

As a skills-based organization, our interview process is designed to understand your unique skills and approach to work. We conduct structured, behavioral-based interviews to learn how you’ve applied Job-Critical and Workday Core Skills in your recent roles.

Workday Core Skills Interview: This interview focuses on 2–3 of the following skills: Trust Building, Inclusivity, Candid Communication, Problem Solving, Creativity, Change Making, Accountability, Execution, and Adaptability.
Tip: Reflect on real experiences where you demonstrated these skills. Think in terms of actions, outcomes, and learnings.

Job-Critical Skills Interview: This interview focuses on 2–3 Job-Critical Skills attached to the job profile.
Tip: Revisit the job description. Think about how you’ve used those skills in recent work and be ready to walk through your thought process and the impact you made.

Depending on the role, the interview process may include a Hiring Manager round, Technical Interview, Job-Critical Skills assessment, Core Skills evaluation, or a Presentation. The interview invitation will specify which Job-Critical and Workday Core Skills the interview will focus on.

How to Prepare

Here are some ways to feel confident and ready:

  • Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your stories
  • Reflect on recent work you’re proud to share
  • Practice communicating your approach clearly and confidently
  • Come with questions — curiosity is a skill, too!

Share recent experiences and accomplishments that relate to the skills being discussed. Be specific about your technical contributions and strike a good balance between “I” and “we” to highlight both your individual impact and team collaboration.

Lastly, keep your answers concise. This gives your interviewer room to dig deeper and better understand your unique strengths.

I hope this gives you a clear picture of what happens after you submit your application, what we look for in candidates, and how you can set yourself up for success in our interview process.

Thanks again for considering Workday. We’re rooting for you!
